As an indoor skydiving athlete when travelling and training one of the things I look forward to is my accomodation. A mix of convenient accomodation that allows close proximity to the tunnel where I am flying and training makes a world of difference.

Rest and sleep are an important part of any athletes training schedule so accomodation choice can play a vital part especially when competing.

For the 3rd FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018  I chose to stay at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa sea & spa which is literally 5min from Gravity tunnel where the World Cup is being held.

While my trip to Bahrain and the 3rd FAI WORLD CUP OF INDOOR SKYDIVING 2018 will be focused on training and competing a girl has to sometimes take time to get a bit of pampering and I am looking forward to any downtime I can get relaxing at the amazing facilities the hotel lists.

The Thalassa Sea & Spa features two hydrotherapy pools and two floors of treatment rooms, a large Gym and the hotel features nine restaurants, bars and lounges.

I will update my experience during the event after the World Cup is over as well as tips for travellers and tunnel flyers visiting Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa sea & spa and the Gravity tunnel.

The Hotel Grounds are amazing and after a long flight the perfect place to rejuvenate and relax

Early morning poolside visits are perfect with pleasant 29 Deg  and the water is the perfect temperature for a swim.

The next morning I took a quick look around the hotel grounds

Breakfast is a treat

What can I say breakfasts are a delight with an amazing choice of food including a great Gluten free area.

There is a large selection of foods and as someone who has to eat Gluten free there is . no shortage of choices. Chefs are waiting to cook fresh made to order omelettes and eggs cooked anyway you like them. There is a large range of healthy choices, salads as well as plenty of hot food choices.

Getting to the hotel from the airport is an easy taxi ride, approx. $15 BAH.

Bahrain Taxi App

Initially I downloaded the Barain Taxi app and it worked pretty well. You can request a taxi and the app shows you when a driver takes your job and also a live map of the taxis approach and licence plate, very comforting when travelling. You receive a nice email receipt of the trip and the cost.

The only thing I would caution is make sure you have cash. I was planning on using credit cards as much as possible but all the taxis I used said cash only and a lot of the drivers did try a bit of bartering about the fare price.

Careem App

However I would highly recommend you try the Careem App. Once I started using this app I found it much easier.  You can add your credit card to the app and then all rides are just jump in, jump out and the app always charges you the exact correct fare shown. Due to this all rides using Careem were cheaper than using the Bahrain Taxi app.

The Careem app also allows tipping the driver which i did use as the fares were cheaper and the drivers charged the correct fare.

Phone and Data

On that note grab a pre paid SIM car at the airport and while initially I planned on data only I would recommend you get a phone / data SIM as you can then use apps such as the Bahrain Taxi app which require a phone number. As well if you use any apps that works off SMS confirmations its handy to have a local phone number. Having a local number also proved use-full  when I needed to call the hotel concierge for assistance and advise.
